Travelling with children

Why Dubai is the best holiday destination for families with children – Part 1

Now I  can see a lot of eyes rolling up there but honestly, having just returned from Dubai, I can’t think of a better place to go for a holiday, especially with children.

Flying time

When travelling with children, flying time is most important  and if you are in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore or Kochi, a non stop flight to Dubai will be under 4 hours.

Climate

How can Dubai’s climate be great when it is just  hot, hot and hotter ? Well, for one the climate control works really well – no electric power outages so you can enjoy air conditioned comfort 24 x7 ( unless of course you are walking on the road or beach!) . One good thing about hot weather is that you don’t have to carry bulky winter clothes so you can really travel light.

Activity

“I’m bored” this oft repeated sentence is what most parents dread in a holiday. Thankfully in Dubai you won’t hear this even if you take them shopping to the Mall because there are so many activities for them to do.

Today I’m going to concentrate on the largest mall of them all :

The Mall of Dubai

Sunday to Wednesday:  10:00am – 11:00pm
Thursday to Saturday: 10:00am – 12:00am

It is easily accessible by Metro, car and taxi. Some hotels also provide shuttle bus services to take you there. A word of caution – the walk from the Metro station to the mall is long and can easily take 15-20 minutes so even though you are walking through an air-conditioned walkway, it is a long walk. The taxi line for a ride home is also quite long and even though it moves fast, factor in 10 minutes at least while planning to go home.

While the adults have plenty of shopping opportunities that include high end luxury goods and a local Souk, the main attractions for children are  the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, KidZania®, SEGA Republic, ReelCinemas megaplex and an Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink.  Along the mall’s sprawling waterfront promenade, is the world’s most spectacular outdoor musical water fountain – The Dubai Fountain.

KIDZANIA

A safe, ineractive world where children can live out their real life fantasy professions operates during working hours of the Mall.

THE DUBAI AQUARIUM AND UNDERWATER ZOO

Who would expect an aquarium in the middle of the Mall? Frankly even though I was expecting this attraction, I was simply stunned by the size of the Aquarium and was quite dumb struck by the fish swimming peacefully amid the crowds around. What was even better was the Candy store that would put Willy Wonka to shame right across.

And there’s a Rainforest too! And you can see Penguins and Otters and see the deadly Piranha too.The average time to visit the Aquarium Tunnel is approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Underwater Zoo located on Level 2 takes approximately 45mins – 1.5 hours. This time could increase should you wish to stay and watch presentations/shows. The Glass Bottom Boat ride lasts approximately 15 – 20 mins experience. Guests are encouraged to book their Boat Ride before their journey to avoid a long waiting period, and bookings can be made at the entrance of the Glass Bottom Boat ride area on Level 2 at Underwater Zoo.

Tickets are available at the Mall but it is advisable to buy tickets on line (starting at AED 55 and go up to AED 110 depending on the package you opt for) as you can plan what exactly it is you want to do.

Lastly, the DUBAI FOUNTAINS which are best seen at night with dramatic lighting to highlight the shooting jet fountains.

Afternoon Shows
Daily except Friday: 1:00pm & 1:30pm
Friday: 1:30pm & 2:00pm

Evening Shows
Daily: 6:00pm to 11:00pm
(Every 30 Minutes)

The shows are for free and my own personal experience was disappointing as I didn’t have a great view from the ground floor. I would advise people to watch from a higher floor as the fountains are truly spectacular!

Disclaimer : This is not a sponsored post nor have I visited all the attractions mentioned herein but seeing the happy people emerging from them, I can only gather that they had a great time.
